NINE WINDS DISCOGRAPHY:

NWCD0209 Ed Harkins/VinnyGolia/Bertram Turetzky-Glossarium

Ed Harkins
trumpet

Edwin Harkins studied with Gunther Schuller, Mel Powell and Ralph Shapey. For ten years he toured with the Extended Vocal Techniques Ensembles and in 1978 joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego. With Philip Larson (bass-baritone) he composes for and performs in [THE], a music-theater duo which has traveled throughout Europe, Scandanavia, Japan, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Mr. Harkins has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards in both composition and performance, including grants [THE] received from the NEA to compose collaborative works with John Cage, Toru Takemitsu and Anthony Braxton. Though Harkins appears on four vocal recordings, his primary work, as a trumpeter, appears on about 20 albums. These comprise performances of works by Iannis Xenakis, Roger Reynolds, Bernard Rands and especially a recording (on CRI) of Kryl, a virtuosic piece written for him by Robert Erickson. His most recent recording is an improvisation trio with Bert Turetzky and Vinny Golia on the 9Winds label.
